What species of fish serve a good member to the eco system in a hand made fish pond??

Question:You know ..
some types which live off the 'junk' in the water to help in cleaning the pond naturally
thanks

Answers:
1. I use plain old Wal-Mart 12-cent goldfish. Mine started out "little bitty" and are now about 10 inches long. Catfish are "bottom feeders" and generally don't eat much algae.
2. Snails also eat algae, but then fish will eat snails.
3. Regarding your ecosystem, plants such as waterlilies will shade the water and compete with algae for oxygen. Algae hate shade.
4. I use "beneficial bacteria" in my filtering system to combat algae. "Microbe-Lift" is my preferred brand. If you don't use this already, you might want to consider it. Beneficial bacteria don't hurt plants or fish.
5. Algae, again, hate shade. Your pond should be in shade about half the day.

small catfish. you can get them at any pet store
I was told by a pet store to put large algae eaters. Like the ones that you put in and aquarium but much larger in my pond during the spring and summer months. But would have to remove and house them before cold weather in a tank with a heater. Then return them in the spring when the water warms up.
