I just found an interesting looking beetle in my backyard. I've included a picture, does some1 know what kind?
Question:I just found this beetle in my back yard, I live in the state of California and it was just sitting there and when he was touched, he kind of hissed.
I was wondering, does anyone know the name of this beetle? Thankyou!

Matter of fact, it is indeed called a hissing beetle...
Ten-Stiped June Beetle or Ten-Lined

Hey Liz, awesome picture! Your beetle is a Tenlined June Beetle, of the Scarab family. He makes a darling little huffing noise when he moves his wings together, which may account for the hissing noise you heard. He's considered a pest to peach trees, so keep him away from those if you have any.
You can read more about him here: http://www.whatsthatbug.com/beetles.html...
There's a couple of different entries about him on at least the first two pages they have over at "What's That Bug?" and I'm sure many more on the rest of their beetle pages.
Enjoy!
i really dont know ..
but that is a cool *** looking beetle!

We have June bugs here in NY as well, only w/out the stripes and much smaller
gorgeous insect!
Everything you are saying (and the picture) confirms is that its a Polyphylla decemlineata (The Ten-lined June Beetle).
They can blow air out their spiracles and make an endearing huffing sound (which probably was the "hiss" you heard).
As it is a June beetle, it poses no threat.
