We're trying to grow grass in our front and back yards...?

Question:but the person who lived here before did nothing to care for it. The grass grows in patches. Is there anything we can do that won't cost a bundle of money. I'd like green grass for the kids, but we're renting...so I'm not spending a whole lot.

Answers:
I would just try to patch the areas that are thin by spreading the seed and very lightly raking it in to the soil. Make sure you get perennial grass cultivars and not annual.

I was going to suggest patch perfect to you, but when I checked the forums and blogs are filled with dissatisfied people, bad product, misleading claims and difficult customer service. So instead I will tell you NOT to try patch perfect.
We used a perennial and annual rye grass mix that is certified no weeds raked it in and put a light cover of straw to keep moisture in.the annual will come up first pretty fast and will help protect the perennial rye till it comes up. It can be picked up any where fairly reasonable for the mix without weeds.
