Is it okay to use dry grass for muilch? I guess that i'm afraid that seeds from the grassor weeds will grow.

Question:is it okay to use dry grass from mowing the yard as mulch? I am concerned that the dry clippings will have seeds from weeds that will grow and that would be a problem for me.

Answers:
Dry grass makes a good temporary mulch; it is too light for most mulching needs. Unless your grass is actively producing seeds, or unless you have many weeds in your lawn, you should not have problems with grass/weeds from this type of mulch.

I use pine bark nuggets for a long-lasting mulch. They rarely need refreshing or replacing, and they are less than $3.00 a bag at my local Lowe's.

One factor to consider when mulching is that some mulches, as they begin to decompose, pull nitrogen from the soil, making it less fertile. However, as decomposition continues, the nitrogen is put back into the soil.

If you're just wanting to use your grass clippings (thank you for not putting them in plastic bags and taking up landfill space!), you may consider composting. The following is an amusing article on composting:

No, I would not do that. I made that mistake when we bought a new house. Each time I mowed the lawn I emptied the grass catcher into my new flower beds for mulch. I had so many weeds that I was unable to maintain the flower beds. I had to pull every thing out and start all over.
Yes it is OK! I do it always!
We use it all the time. Grass clippings are high in nitrogen, they do not pull nitrogen from the soil at all. They also do not add weeds or grass to your flower beds. The best thing about them is that they are free and abundant. We place 3-4 inches around everything. For an extra heavy duty mulch, put down some layers of newsprint and cover them with the grass clippings.
Any weeds that do sprout through any mulch will be easy to remove. We just lay them down on top of the mulch and they become part of it.

Good Luck and Happy Gardening from Cathy and Neal!
I would mulch the grass clippings...Use either Leaves(oak if possiable) or go to the feed store and get some oat or wheat straw. for mulch.
