Why do snails only appear when it's raining? And where are they when it's not?

Question:I find it a curious thing that when it rains out come snails and yet if it remains dry you never see them...

Answers:
Snails are made up of 50% water. They need wet conditions to survive, thats why they come out at night. In the sun, they quickly lose their fluids and could die within minutes of going out. They live in damp conditions through the day, like rotting vegetation, brick work, logs etc. They come out during the rain because they are not likely to lose to much fluid.

Its so they can move about quicker, when its dry they stick to the ground. I think they hide in shrubs and stuff when its not raining.
They are attracted to moisture. And when it's not raining they find a damp place. Dark and damp.
When dry they root about the garden and vegetation.
They come out in heavy rain so as not to drown.
Well if it's raining salt, they're just trying to stay alive!
may be they afraid to get drown! when it is dry, they just stay at cooling quiet place!
They need moisture to reproduce, so when it's raining they come out and when it's dry they hide under things like strips of corrugated iron or wood.
I think they are all in my garden.
Most land snails are nocturnal, but following a rain may come out of their hiding places during the day. (In shady spots so they don't dry up). They move with a gliding motion by means of a long flat muscular organ called a foot. Mucus, constantly secreted by glands in the foot, facilitates movement and leaves a silverlike slimy trail. The reproductive organs of both sexes occur in the same individuals and each is capable of self- fertilization, although cross fertilization is normal.

TMI?
They don't like the sun. You will find then under rocks and other objects on the ground.
asleep!
