Wear really good boots [high-tops, heavy leather] or leggings and carry a stick with you out walking...no, seriously folks, deterrence like a magic spray or border thingie probably wouldn't do the job--after the first rain, they'd be washed off or away. Keep the shrubbery cleared around your house [no hidey-holes] and don't step into rocky areas without checking around first. Snakes prefer to avoid you if possible, but don't like being surprised if you come up on them, so keep your eyes open and watch where you are stepping. Snakes eat vermin and are nature's little mouse-patrol workers... give them space & respect!
My mother-in-law lives on 1 1/2 acres in the hill country of Texas and she has outdoor cats but she never has snakes. The cats keep the snakes away.
Granulated sulfur will irritate/burn their skin. It will also acidify the soil. Keep the acid in mind as it may affect the plant material. Re-apply after @2 inches of precipitation, yours or rain.
Good Luck!
Cats work best for me, though my dogs also will kill the copperheads.
powdered sulphur
rattlesnakes and copperheads like to eat rodents (rats, mice, baby squirrels, etc.) AND baby birds, and they also will drink standing water. Keep those items off your property (I know, it is next to impossible) and you will have a leg up on the problem. I don't think that crushed lime or quick lime will work, but crushed or powdered sulphur sometimes works--obtain at hardware store. If the lot isn't really big, some of those electronic devices that set up vibrations will work. Vibration---not noise per se is a deterrent to snakes. Venomous snakes "hear" by feeling vibrations. Good luck.
