Rose bush care...?
Question:I live in the Illinois region (don't know why that is important for my question) anyway I wanted to know I have a mix of about 4 different roses growing pretty nicely along one side of my house. Do I need to dead head roses to keep them going all year long? If so can I cut the dead blooms off rather than pulling them by hand?
Answers:
Yes, deadheading promotes further blooming. To deadhead a rose, prune (do not pinch) down the branch to the first set of 5 leaves. Prune just above that set of leaves. The first set of leaves down from the blooms are usually a set of threes. A few roses do not need to be deadheaded. The new shrub roses, like Knockouts, will bloom all season. The are a real chore to deadhead because they produce so many blooms.
I live in Illinois as well, and I do both, pull and cut the dead blooms off. To let it keep blooming though don't cut or pull anything but the bloom. I was always told to keep them blooming you should take off the dead blooms, it helps to bloom flowers which would otherwise fall off. The bush can put its' energy into those blooms. The number of flowers that the bush will have are set the year before after they are done flowering. I have always noticed that when it gets really hot the bushes stop flowering. But when it starts to cool later in summer they start to bloom again. I don't mess with my roses too much other than to remove the old blooms and they are doing well. These have been in my yard for 50 years, since my family moved here.
yes u can cut the dead rose off but not the hole stem if u cut the hole stem off the bush will become Barr cut down to the next leaf.the stem will die a little later then u just brake it off afterwords.
