In your opinion is having a "GREEN THUMB" merely a MYTH?Or common sense gardening?

Question:Do you honestly feel that it takes 'something' special within a person to grow several varieties of plants successfully?
Or is it basically just simply planting, watering properly ect?

Answers:
Gardening is part art, part science, and luck as all these answers have alluded to. The point everyone missed is a "green thumb" is a lot of god damned hard work! RScott

No. I think it is just following instructions as to plant's needs like water, sunlight, and fertilizer. If you start with easy to care-for plants you will have a lot of them looking good and flourishing and will have your own "green thumb" reputation.
It is just a skill, and like all skills, some folks might be naturally better at it, but it can be learned and master by anyone who takes the time and effort to learn.

Plants, like all living things, need certain criteria to be met to really thrive and if you understand that then you should have no problems.
common sense and knowledge of lighting, soils, plant growth and sizes, which likes sun, shade or both, moist or dry soil, etc.
Some like acid soil, some like alkaline soil. Do your research and you can do it too. what is annual in your area, which are perennial. be sure to ask. I have done it for almost 40 years and I have most success, but some failures.
I think that if you know how to care for plants and do what is needed, you can claim a green thumb because your plants will grow well.
It is a combination of skill an intuition. You can learn a lot, but your get feel is a part as well. Both will improve with experience. The key is to keep learning and trying new things, techniques.

And to have fun ;)

It's a myth - anyone interested enough can develop a "green thumb".
Luck plays a role. Ability and desire factor in as well. I have hundreds of plants. Love the jungle I live in.
