Should i dig out grass then but gravel down or put protective layer on grass and then gravel on top?

You can but you should treat the area with a quality weedkiller. This could take up to 3 weeks max for the total area to be killed off. Then you can put down your membrane.
Personally i would take up the grass.
You need a retainer of some sort. Either Timber, concrete edgings.
The timber needs to be sunk in the ground by about an inch and use stakes to hold it in place. Make sure the timber is tanalised(preservative) and rough sawn.
Concrete edgings come in various shapes and sizes and again need to sunk and laid on a concrete base. 4xsand to 1xcement mix.

I am thinking of doing this also and consulted with a landscape guy. It is very difficult to dig up the grass yourself and expensive if you hire someone to do it for you. He suggested to spray the lawn with lawn killer then lay down either landscape grade protector or a thick layer of newspaper (much cheaper) and then put the gravel on top. He said using the larger rock is better.
It depends on the required finished level of the gravel. Its ok to put the membrane over the grass as it will kill the vegetation but its better to dig off the sod (2 inches) first and then put the membrane down if you want to finish at the existing lawn level. 1 tonne gravel will cover 10 M2 at a depth of 2 inches.
I don't see why you would need gravel. Till the soil, add a good organic compost (Cotton Burr Compost preferably), smooth the compost and then lay your sod or seed.

What are you trying to accomplish?
What type of terrain do you have?

There may be special circumstances where you might need gravel but it seems unnecessary.
my husband is a gardener n he suggested cutting grass then putting plastic down and gravel on top hope this helps marie
Hi just to say about 4 years ago i got rid of my grass in the front-dug that out still put protective layer down and stoned on the top. we are now in the middle of getting rid of the grass in back paveing that but we' ve put the protective layer on top of grass then some crusher run on top of that and we' re going to get a wacker and wack the stone down and then paveing on the top - that' ll keep grass at bay!!!
you dont have to dig out the grass just spray with glyphosate weed killer.once dry and given eight hours without rain it will have been taken into the plant and you can cover the ground with landscape fabric.now you can put down the gravel the weed killer will still be working even though it is under the gravel.
If you remove grass that you don't want and put a high quality ground cloth under the gravel, it will be much easier to maintain. The grass qon't be trying to come up through the goundcloth and gravel.
