They would kill it but a gopher, believe it or not is smarter than that. I used to have the county come and poison them -- they used grain treated with cyanide put it down the hole and covered it up with grass and dirt--no more gophers.
No, they actually quaddrouple in size! I've seen them as tall as 4 feet with teeth at 6 inches or longer!
