How do you harvest sod? Landscaping lawn.?
Question:I have a big yard and after taking down a temp. pool (24 by 4) i have a big dead spot and I want to see if cutting 12 by 12 patches from different areas of my backyard and transplanting in the dead circle would be realistic..how deep do I go and is there anything else I need to know? I would like to do this in the next 2-3 days while it's STILL raining here in Houston. HELP!
Answers:
Go to your local equipment rental store and rent a "Sod Cutting" machine. Most large rental firms have these to rent. If you do get one, make sure they give you first hand instructions on how to operate it safely and efficiently. Its easy once you get the hang of it... Hope this answers your question.

you dont need to go very deep just use a spade shovel and make your patches and grab it under the soil and pull up on it it should pill right off or use a flat shovel to get under it to break up any deeper roots grass roots spread out not down to far
You could visit a nursery and/or home improvement store to purchase sod by the square yard , available on a pallet if you have access to a truck. Removing sod from your yard will simply leave bare spots elsewhere. The smartest solution would be a bag of good seed and some watering, it will grow .
It would probably be a lot less noticeable if you dug up 4x4 or 6x6 inch plugs from around the yard. Just dig them up with a round point shovel and dig a similar size hole where you want to put the plug. Take the dirt from the pool area plug and put it in the lawn where the original plug was. Even though it's raining in Houston now, you will probably get the best results if you wait for cooler temps in the fall.
