How do i keep rabbits/birds out of my strawberries.?
Question:Im trying to grow strawberries for the first time. Everytime i get a few, i notice the next day their gone. Its gotta be rabbits or birds. whats the best way to keep them out? And are they supose to lay on the ground to ripen?
Answers:
They make netting that you can put over them to keep the birds away.
those plastic owls at walmart work really well! they have new ones now that have heads that move in the wind.... they work cuz i have one of the old ones that just sit there and the lil pests don't come near it! rather cheap and very effective!!
I had a similar problem, except with tomatos. Rabbits really dislike garlic, so I sprinkle on garlic powder everytime after I water. I haven't had any problems since. I also heard that spreading cat urine and sheep blood around works too (makes it seem like the territory of a killer carnivore), but I haven't tried that yet. If you don't like those ideas, you can try planting garlic all around your strawberries, making a 'garlic fence,' though it could take awhile to grow. ^_^ Good luck!
I keep rabbits out of my garden by marking with cat urine. When I clean out the litter box, I take it outside and rinse it with the hose, and pour the rinse water around the edge of the garden. I've heard that planting marigolds in a border also keeps them out. If your problem is birds, you'll probably have to go with the netting.
