How to keep racoons out of garbage?

Question:

Answers:
Get the best & heaviest plastic garbage/trash can with a lid that can be turned and locked into place...raccoons have clever little hands and can lift off anything else. Be sure not to "trail" any goodies as you dump food waste...less attractions for them to keep on trying. If you feed other animals outdoors [dogs, cats, whatever] make sure to bring the dishes back indoors after they've chowed down... raccoons love dogfood, catfood, anyfood...so don't leave anything out they would consider snacks. Basically, reduce the target to just a big green plastic hopper they can't open. Some folks put bricks on top of a regular garbage can, but a team of greedy raccoons generally figure that out too.

Hi, The only way to keep any animal out of the garbage bin is to secure it with a heavy clasp across the lid and down under the rim. If this is not enough you will have to put it all around the bin to the floor and underneath. keep them in wire cage. The best thing is to make sure you clean out the cans and bottles before you put them in. Don't put out waste food burn it in the boiler if you can. Any thing that can be composted should be composted in a secure bin. Try to get it all done in one place. The compost shared out with neighbours, its a good way of meeting people. How much of the stuff you put in the bin could you recycle that will give them less to play with in the long run. You could try to distract them by hanging things up for them to play with then maybe they will not interfere with your bins. Some hope! The BBC article suggests removing tree branches which give access to your yard and cover the drain pipes to stop then using them as a freeway around your property. Killing hasn't worked. Keeping the area clean and tidy, the bins clean and secure seems to be the best way. A population crash in numbers is the result and the problem will come back into balance over time. They are leaving the wild for the easy pickings of your back yard so get together with your neighbours and tidy and clean up.Sorry it seems a lot of work but worth it in the long run.
