How can I make grass grow back quickly after being burned?
Question:A patch in my yard accidently caught on fire. I need to get it fixed ASAP. Any advice on how to make it grow back really quick would be GREATLY appeciated. Thanks.
Answers:
1. Purchase one bag of topsoil, one bag of compost, (cow, garden, tree and shrub mix, etc...) one 3lb bag of triplex perennial ryegrass, and one small bag of starter fertilizer from your local garden center. (NOT a Big Box.)
2. Mix entire bags of topsoil and compost in a wheelbarrow. Add recommended amounts of grass seed and starter fertilizer per 1000 sq. ft. divided by the square feet in the area to cover. Mix thoroughly.
3. Apply a two inch layer of the mixture over the burnt area, and iron rake thoroughly to a depth of about two inches of the original grade.
4. Pat down area with your feet gently and make sure area is evenly graded. Regrade and pat down as needed.
5. Spray entire area with fine mist of water to wet approximately 1/4 inch deep. KEEP AREA MOIST so it does not dry out, approximately 2-3 weeks. 3-4 times a day is not unusual. WARNING! If seed starts to germinate, and you let area dry out, seed dies. It will not wait for you to come home from work to water it.
6. Grass seed will germinate in three days and continue to do so for the next few weeks. Expect to mow on the fourth week.
7. Maintain after as you do the remainder of your turf.
Proably want to remove the dead grass, add some top soil to the area and then they sell this green newspaper mulch at home depot that has grass seed in it.
Its gonna take a few weeks to start growing back, but the green mulch does not make it look as bad!
You can't make grass seed grow any quicker than it wants, but you can get ready-made lawn which you could place in the gap. Remove the old burnt stuff, put in some good soil and lay the new grass. Will take a while to look as one but it's instant grass! Not sure if you have to buy a minimum amount though...
I think everyone missed the point that he/she burned the lawn with fire. There is no reason that your lawn will not come back quickly with just regular waterings. If you burned your lawn with excessive chemical compounds, thats a different story. I say water frequently and you should be fine. It should take less time for your lawn to start pushing new growth, than it take for grass seed to germinate(7-14days). Besides, you would need to let the newly seeded area reach about 4 1/2" before mowing.
