Why Are Strawberry Patches ‘mowed’ after the season is over?

Question:Why do strawberry farms cut all the strawberry plants leaves off or back after the crop is harvested? It looks like they have been mowed. I am wondering if I should do the same to my patch with my weed wacker. What is the benefit?

Answers:
If you look carefully, they have mown this years plants and have left the runners in new rows. Commercial growers usually don't use the same plants over and over.

I have never seen this done and I have seen a lot of strawberry farms. I grow them in a small patch and just cover with straw at the end of the summer. Cutting them would also cut the runners that grow new plants.
