How many types of LAVENDAR is there? And which one reaches the highest HEIGHT??
Question:Thanks so much
Answers:
I grow six different kinds of lavender in my garden. There are four basic kinds - French, Spanish, English, and Spike. There are over 30 varieties within those four types. I have some of each and they were all planted at the same time. The Spanish are the shortest and smallest and the French is by far the tallest. My french lavender that is pruned along the sides has grown to over four feet in two years. I would recommend a French variety - the one I have has serrated grey leaves and compact pale lavender flowers with no obvious petals sticking out. I dont know the exact species unfortunately, but it may be lavandula dentata candicans.
I do know that lavandula heterophylla becomes very large too - you can try that too. Heres a link to a great site with lots of pics and descriptions
There are many different types of Lavender ... and the 'tallest' one is the 'old fashioned' Lavender ... it's sold as 'Lavender' or possibly as 'French Lavender' ...
Lavender is a perennial member of the large mint family and does well in situations with full sun and dry, well-drained, average soil. Though there are around 30 varieties, the most popular for the home garden are the hardy English and more tender French and Spanish types. English lavender is considered the top choice for fragrance purposes, but all the lavenders make lovely, fragrant additions to almost any type of home situation, as long as they are given very well-drained soil and lots of sunlight. Though English lavender can make it through the winter if given some shelter from the elements and a good protective mulch, the French and Spanish types should be moved inside or replaced yearly.
