I have dirt sports in my yard, how do I get the grass to grow?

Question:I was wondering if anyone can tell me how I can get grass to grow over dirt spots. The ground is very hard and its scattered throughout my yard. The owners before me spread lime and fertilizer on the ground and nothing happened and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

Answers:
Bare spots can be corrected by first watering the area and then working it up with a hard rake or shovel. Mix in some bagged compost and granular gypsum, then mix it into the soil. You can add some pre-plant fertilizer (such as a 6-20-20 or a 5-10-10). Scatter your grass seed, sprinkle some peat moss or more compost over the top (only enough to slightly cover the seed and prevent drying between waterings). You'll need to water frequently throughout the day to keep the seeds and soil moist.

The compost and gypsum will help breakup your hard soil which will allow water and air to penetrate your soil. Since the previous owners have spread lime to raise the pH, you should apply the granular gypsum over the rest of your lawn to help break up the compacted soil.

NOTE:
IF you live in an area where your daytime summer temperatures are high, I'd suggest you wait till fall before attempting this.

Make sure you identify the grass currently being grown before purchasing your seed. Lawns don't look too good when you have two completely different varieties being grown together.

Hope this information helps get your lawn in better shape. GOOD LUCK!

break up the dirt a little so it isn't hard. throw down some grass seeds (very important to spread only a thin layer- too much and they inhibit each other's growth). put 1/2" soil on top and water the crap out of it until it becomes well rooted.
