Why do the flower buds on my peony bush turn brown & die before they open?
Question:The bush had a full bloom of beautiful flowers-followed by new buds that turned brown quickly and died. Leaves are not brown. Location is not very sunny, but I have not choice.
Answers:
Though they have bloomed in the past, they may now be having problems blooming for the following reasons:
1) The weather is too hot. In hot climates you should select earlier bloomers.
2) Competition with other shrubs or tree roots.
3) The roots are water logged from too much rain/irrigation.
4) The pants are under nourished, fertilize.
5) The ground is too dry. Peonies should receive 1" of water a week.
6) Too much shade. Earlier they received more light because the trees had not fully leafed out yet.
I was always told peonies will not open without ants on them. I'm sure it's an old wives tale but I thought of it when you asked.
when the main flower bud has opened and been pollinated the other buds don't always open.
The fact that the others bloomed means it gets plenty of sun sometime during the day, so that's not the problem. I have also had buds that came later than the others and didn't bloom. I haven't fertilized mine in years, so I think this is the problem.
They generally have one big blooming season, for a few weeks in late April to June depending on where you live. You will always have s few that don't open, especially the later buds. So if you had a full bloom, your plant is probably fine. I have had mine for over 35 years and this year had over 100 blooms, but still had a few that just didn't do squat. Just cut them off when I cut back the bloom stems so I now have a nice green shrub
