Cause of yellow and brown spots on the leaves of apple trees?
Question:I have two apple trees in my back yard that I believe are red and yellow (or golden) delicious variety. They both have these spots on their leaves that are leaving them looking very sickly. There was a late freeze this year that caught them while they were blooming but I have other apple trees that are a different variety that don't have this condition. I'm hoping someone might be able to suggest a cause and if there is anything I can or should do for the trees. Thanks in advance for any help.
Answers:
Though Apple Scab and Cedar Apple Rust are two common diseases that can cause brown and yellow leaf spots respectively, those leaf spots could be caused by any number of diseases. It's pretty difficult to determine which diseases are the actual sources of your leaf spots just from this description. Diseases are best controlled when you can identify the specific causal agent and implement a cultural and possible spray program for the specific disease. Here are a couple of good articles that discuss diseases of apple trees and their control that should help you with identification and a cure: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/pg/pg0...
