Mimosa Tree..?
Question:Ok I want to plant a mimosa tree in my yard and my friend has a sprout to give me, but I don't have the area ready to plant it in yet. Can I get the sprout started in a pot then when ready transplant it?? I have never grown a mimosa tree before so I am not sure the best way to go about starting it out. She also said she can get me seeds. Would that be better/easier than a starter plant.. Thanks for the help/comments!

I have two Mimosa trees in my yard. While I LOVE the beautiful flowers, I wish that I had planted the trees further back in the corners of my yard.
They are VERY messy trees and require a lot of raking and sweeping while in bloom.
These trees are best planted in open areas or downhill from a deck (so you can all the lovely flowers, but the mess is hidden by the leaves!).
The branches are also rather fragile, so they should be protected from a lot of wind.
A seedling will grow in a pot just fine!!

In my neck of the woods Mimosa trees grow in just about any conditions, so I would think that leaving it in a pot for a short time would be fine. Get some seeds from your friend just in case the tree in the pot doesn't do well. Good luck!
Do you really want to have that type of tree?
Once grown they drop seeds all over and cause big problems.Most neighbors would ask you to not grow them in your yard.They are invasive.
Mimosas are lovely and produce really cool pink flowers. They are kind of like a weed in that they will grow anywhere and are very hardy. I think you should have time to get a place ready for it. One thing I would like to warn you about is that the bees really love the flowers which is not a problem until they fall. You'll need to clean up the fallen flowers frequently or you will have bees sitting on the ground just waiting to be stepped on by a bare foot. I know this from experience.
