I need help with landscaping/gardening!!?
Question:Our fixer-upper home is becoming quite a project especially when I have no idea of how to landscape/garden. We pulled out all of the old shrubs in the front of the house and plan to plant small low-maintainence shrubs in their place. We also want to mulch around that area and do some kind of edging like rock or that black edging stuff. The problem is we have major grub damage in the front yard and also a weed problem. My question is, what do I have to do before I can begin mulching/planting? Can I put down bug & weed killer together? What kinds are best? Any suggestions help! Thanks!!

It helps to till up or loosen up the soil before planting anything and follow planting instructions carefully. Do not cover the plants roots any higher then they were when you got them with the mulch you put down it will choke them off and stunt their growth or kill them.
You need to go to a green house or garden center and ask what they have available for weeds that won't kill the types of bushes or ornamentals you wish to plant and put down weed mat before planting to keep them down and mulch over that.
tiller. we tilled the yards because we had the same problem. weeds and grubbs. new dirt also helped. it was hard work but it got done. the yard looks great. not too much chemical. any one will do. good luck
I just bought a new house too with landscaping issues. I have never been responsible for any type of gardening in my life. I totally intended to learn all I needed to and take charge. I've found the best answer to be.. hire a landscaper! I still keep trying on my own but nothing works. Everything I try to keep alive (plants) seem to die and everything I try to kill (weeds) keep coming back! Good luck :)
You can put down Dylox for grub control or go to a local home improvement warehouse and get some otc pesticide that will help. Boxwoods are typical low maintenance shrubs that work well in front of a house. A wax myrtle or Holly tree are good trees for corners of the front of homes. Silver Hawthornes are good shrubs too, but they grow quick and require frequent pruning. The best prep for a bed is bringing in some compost and manure to combine with what's currently in that area. It isn't necessary to put pesticide down in these areas, but you can use most grub killing pesticides around shrubs with no harm done.
June is too late to plant.Wait untill fall.Cover the area you want to plant now with black plastic. This will kill all disease and weed seeds .
