Tips on preventing squash beetles in our pumpkin patch?

Question:Last year our pumpkins got hit pretty bad my squash beetles. We soon learned that the adults were almost impossible to kill and we had to use pesticide. Does anyone know of a way to prevent these bugs early on? We haven't put any of our pumpkins in the ground yet, but when we do I'd like to avoid another infestation.

Answers:
Sevin or an insecticide is about the only thing I have found that works. These same beetles also bother cucumbers and squash. You'll need to use a powder on the vines as soon as you see the first one. Since you had them bad last year, be prepared for them this year. The beetles spread a disease called "wilt" which quickly wipes out a pumpkin patch.

You might try some of the things tried on this site.
