Suggestions for low thirst, low maintenance turf-type grass for hot dry lawn area that gets a lot of traffic?
Question:I need a low maintenance environmentally friendly grass for my lawn that not only tolerates the hot dry climate in Sunny California but will THRIVE in the hot summer sun and stay green without needing lots of water. Hot summers, cool to cold winters. My neighbors are pretty intolerant of anyone whose grass isn't golf course perfect and manicured to look like a green carpet. This grass gets full sun and foot traffic daily, as well as hot dry air in summer and dry cool air in winter (but no less sunny). It is mowed and edged weekly. The soil is clay-y. My city doesn't like brown either but we are in the midst of a drought and need to conserve water. Synthetic turf is too pricey--I have a huge area to cover. My city doesn't permit hardscapes in the front--only limited to borders which I already have. Also, I have a brown thumb. Any suggestions for grass, grass, grass that will do well under these conditions with twice a week watering? Thanks.

There are a few types of Buffalo grass you can use-- most varieties use something like 40%-60% less water and can handle heat well.
I live in an interior area of California that gets hot as h*ll in the summer too.
