Can you grow fruit trees on a sloping site?
Question:Have just bought a 5 acre property, mostly cleared, but sloping. There's a great sunny clear space where I'd love to put in a small orchard of citrus, apples and stone fruit, but the ground slopes at about a 25 degree angle. Can you grow fruit trees on sloping ground? If they won't do well, I don't want to go to all the trouble and expense. Thank you :-)
Answers:
As far as I know, the primary reason most orchards are planted on flat ground is for easier access. Trees grow away from the center of the earth, so if you plant the trees with the trunk plumb it should grow straight, and yield plenty of fruit, assuming that the soil is right for the trees.
Well, yeah, you can. Plant the tree straight up and down, not with the slope. As long as it gets the correct sunlight and water, it should start producing fruit in a couple of years. Olive trees are grown on a slope, apple trees grow up in hte mountains on a slope. The area donen't have to be perfectly flat.
you should have no problem planting them on a hill plus when they are ready shake the tree and will all roll to you easy picking but besides the jkn you see trees on hillsides all the time and shouldn't be a problem make sure they are planted deep enough so the roots don't come out in years to come and also i am not sure what a stone fruit is and i believe i know who is asking this ? even though been a long time sturt
What region of the world are you in? The only problem you may run into is that a certain fruit may not grow well in your area, but other than that you shouldn't run into a problem. My grandfather has a veritable farm in his garden (we live in the city) and his hill is on a slope. He grows apples, figs, plums a few other tree's I cant remember. Good luck!
