Planting in summer.?
Question:Everything I have ever had has died. I want a small garden across the back of the house & I have no idea what to plant. It's allready summer and the temputure is usally in the 90's everyday. I live in North Carolina & I despeatly want a garden of flowers and maybe some ivy? Tips on soil also? I'm working with a layer of sand on top of dirt. Please please help! Thanks.

Look at your local garden center for some of these annual flowers. They all love and thrive in the summer heat and should bloom for you until your first killing frost.
Vinca (or periwinkles)
Gazanias
Lantana
Portulaca (or rose moss)
Purslane
Ageratum
Marigolds
Zinnias
Tropical Hibiscus
The only Ivy that I know of that can handle direct sun and hot weather is plain old english ivy. That stuff can grow anywhere!
Some perennials to consider (those are things that you plant once and they return each spring) are as follows:
Black eyed Susans (Ruddebeckia)
Purple Cone Flowers
Shasta Daisy
Cannas
Garden Phlox
Stella de'Oro Daylilies (repeat bloomers)
