Transplanting Irises in zone 5?

Question:I have Bearded Irises and dwarf Irises and would like to know when to transplant them, and how deep to plant them.

Answers:
Very good, putting your zone! That helps a lot. As the other respondent said, you can divide your rhizomes when you replant them. I do things a bit different. I dig up and replant in august and I live in zone 4. I imagine you may have an extra month time to do this. I cut off all but 2-3" of the greenery then I dig and divide. The rhizomes like to breath so I don't plant mine very deep but deeper than needed in your area. For you I would say about an inch of soil over the rhizome and your mulch if your using any. I water mine well after planting and again before the first freeze. In the spring, push back the mulch a bit from around the greenery and if you get flowers that first spring you don't have to push it back the following spring cause you'll know you planted at the right depth. Hope this makes sense.

after they are done blooming, separate the bases and set them where you want them. lightly cover them with potting soil. You don't even need to water them, they will do their own thing and bloom for you next year.
I think that you will find all your answers on this web site. It is also fun to check out the beautiful collection of Iris they have.
