Can you grow a hedge from seed?
Question:We are wanting Beech hedge for our garden but the area we need will cost us about £2000!! We aren't in any rush and wouldn't mind growing from seed - is this possible?
Answers:
Yes! you can but it will take many years, if you buy an established tree and let it grow until you have enough shoots to take cuttings from you will get your hedge in half the time and much healthier and stronger too, if you have a clay soil go for Hornbeam nearly identical to Beech (hard to tell the difference) and better in clay soils
try grafting.... cutting with root hormone and a little time
Break off a bit from an existing one and plant it. It's faster.
yes it is possible but will take time you are better buying small beech hedge and letting it grow as it grows quite quickly
Try `treehelp store .com`. You can grow Beech from seed, but it is NOT quick. I reckon after ten years it could be knee-high, depending on growing conditions. For 60-80 cm high green beech hedging you would pay 80 pence each (approx) ,£2000 buys about 2500 trees + carriage. Do you need in excess of 2000 trees, or is someone ripping you off ?
Not sure but I planted a load of buddleia seed in pots then transplanted them round my daughters back garden when they were big enough. They have grown into a beautiful hedge with lovely summer flowers and the butterflies they attract are beautiful.Seeds cost about £1.50.
Break off some branches, put them in rooting complex, plant them and water often. It works for some shrubs. Hope it works for you!
