What can I do to save my lucky bamboo?

Question:I received a lucky bamboo plant from my mom a couple months ago. She had it in her office for years and it grew like crazy. When she gave it to me, I pruned some of the leaves back because I heard that was good for it. I put it in a room with indirect sunlight and have been watering it regularly. The past month I noticed some of the leaves turning yellow. Then a few days ago it started to smell like rotten eggs and I noticed the stalks are mushy. I changed the water, washed the rocks and roots thoroughly and repotted it. Now it is starting to smell again. Does it have a virus? Is there anything I can do to save it? Is it more work than it's worth?

Answers:
Time to get a little ruthless. Cut away anything soft , rotten or whatever doesn't look so good, this means leaves, stems and roots. Next, remove a few of the healthy leaves that would be underwater and dip whatever is left in 10% bleach and rinse. Repot in a pot with gravel that have also had the bleach treatment. It wouldn't hurt to add a few drops of peroxide to the water until things get back to normal. RScott

go ask someone at a floral shop...im pretty sure they know all about it
This might not be all that's going on here, but I think people clean them too much. My mum and sister kill these all the time because they are clean freaks. How often do you pull out other plants and wash the roots? I have mine in colored glass containers you can't see through, and only wash the top rocks, they've been doing great for 4 years.
Other than that, is the light too indirect? Is your water too hard or very chlorinated? If you have filtered drinking water at home, give them that.
I'm sure its possible that they are just somehow diseased through no fault of your own, and you may want to start over. Mine came from a dollar store.
Hi, and it has root rot! I've had mine for years. It's in a vase of water with rocks in it though. It's kept in a east facing window.I purchased some fertiliser for it,it's called."Lucky Bamboo Fertiliser" This is what it says on the container--- It's a 2-2-2 and for indoors or outdoor.Botanical name is,Dracaenna sanderana. It likes temperatures from 45 degrees to 90 F. Grows best in a well lighted area, but not direct sunlight. Change water weekly in the summer or 2 to 3 times a month during the winter or if water has malodor.Tap water works best,do not use distilled water. Roots can be trimmed once a year, cut length in half. Plant's roots grow in water or pebbles.Plants will also grow in soil. I hope this helps you out. I would take it out of the pot, trim the roots, and put it in water. If you want it potted, do that after it has become used to it's new house. Good luck,Bye
