Cut the rose stem you wish to prop., remove the bottom set of leaves, dip the bottom of the stem into a powder root hormone, stick into prepared moist soil and keep it misted, out of the bright sun. After a few weeks it should develope roots, then you can plant it in the ground. If the stem you chose has a flower, cut it off before you propagate it. Good Luck to ya!!!
for outdoor propagation: roses can most easily be propagated by cuttings in autumn. first, take pieces of stem about 8 in in length from well-ripened branches that have grown during the previous five or six months. the cuttings should have all but the top leaf snipped off. then, make a slit in the ground by levering a spade to and fro to create a wedge-shaped hole about 6 in deep. it will help a little if sharp sand is placed in the bottom of the hole. next, place the cuttings in the hole about 4 in apart and firm the soil around the hole. cuttings which 'take' will produce new shoots and can be transplanted one year later. (water until the rains begin).
Roses are easiest propagated through cuttings. Best way I have found is to set up a mini-greenhouse using either old 2 liter soda bottles or large, clear storage bins. This reduces the amount of misting required. Also, placing the containers underneath florescent lights will greatly increase your success.
