You can't beat sevin dust. Take an old jelly jar and poke small holes in the lid ( or any type of shaker) and sprinkle it on the plants . Check to see if its ok on those types of vegetables. I know it washes off easy, but i don't know what kind of residue it leaves.
Flour targets aphids, spider mites, & caterpillers. (1)
Put ordinary white cooking flour in a shaker & sprinkle on the lettuce & cabbage. Do this in the morning when the dew is on the plants or after they are wet from rain or watering. Crawling loopers (caterpillers) will climb up from where they've been hiding under the leaves & get coated with the flour & suffocate & fall off. Just collect the outside leaves where they've fallen & discard.
Pour sour milk on the head of cabbage to kill insect eggs.
For long-range control you can use one of several materials utilizing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) for controlling cabbage worms, cabbage loopers, and diamondback moths. (2)
A simple organic potion to keep bugs away. In a blender mix 4 cloves of garlic with 1 chopped onion. Place this mixture in a large glass jar and add 2 cups of water. Add 2 teaspoons of bottled hot pepper sauce, stir ingredients together and steep for 2 days. Strain the mixture and add one tablespoon Ivory liquid soap. Then dilute with 5 cups of water. Don't forget the last part or it'll be too strong, & apply only in the cooler part of the day.(3)
