Cleaning a flower bed?

Question:My house is less then two years old but my flower bed is overgrown with weeds. The builder did not put any type of weed control i.e the black sheets. So i am constantly pulling weeds. I am afraid to use any weed killer in the area as it may damage the shrubs. How often am i supposed to be maintaining the area? Once a week once a month? What about mulch should i remove the mulch that is currently there and just put new mulch in? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Answers:
You should be maintaining it every week if not more. If you want the weeds to stay under control then you should be pulling them. Do you have flowers?
You should pull the weeds out at least once a week.
You can use mulch to help with weed control but it wont stop it completely and the black mats dont always work weed do grow through those too.
Maybe a 2" of mulch around the plants.
If you want it to look good you have to spend time out taking care of it. So I hope you get what you are looking for. If you arent sure ask a local nursery or at one of the stores that sells plants ask them.

I would rake the old mulch out, pull or hoe all the weeds, till if you can safely between the shrubs, put down weed block, and finally fresh mulch. This is NOT a once and done thing. May have to be repeated as the mulch decomposes, and weeds sprout.
I would not remove the old mulch, it will decompose, just add fresh ..and you prob. could ude a weed killer like round up just spray on a windstill morning or late afternoon and spray directly on the weeds..usually that stuff does not damage shrubs. I found the weedmats useless the weeds just grow on top but a lot of ppl like them. Once you add extra mulch you should have less weeds anyway.
what you need is to mow your lawn. Then take all the grass and put it all around the shrubs in which you would like to keep.
Remove all the weeds with what ever method you prefer. Then put Casoron down. Casoron is a pre-emergent. Then put bark or mulch over the top of it. The Casoron will prevent any new weed from germinating, and will not hurt your existing plants.
