Putting up garden fence?
Question:I am so sick of having animals get into my vegetables - I've tried pie plates on string, and scarecrows but to no avail. I know that fencing probably won't help with the deer but at least it will keep out the woodchucks and rabbits. We've got a couple rolls of fencing (the wire garden kind), but I've never put in a fence before. Any tips? Like how closely spaced do the posts have to be, and how deep do they have to be? I want to be able to take it up relatively easily, but obviously I don't want it to be falling over either.
Answers:
Try 8 foot spacing on posts, maybe even 12 but with no brace posts not too far. If it is stif wire go with 12. Plant them about 16 to 18 inches since you want to remove them.
space the poles about every 6 ft. and 2 to2 and half feet into the ground should be solid enough.
Posts 8' apart and about 2' deep (usually embraced with cement are average. Since you also want easy removal and more temporary, you may be interested in metal posts that can be pounded into ground instead of posts needing post-hole digger. Staying with temporary fence, can do 10' apart and 1' deep plus 'plant' bottom of wire fence into dirt or rabbits will go under. Deer can still jump over. laying wire on ground can be a deterant for hoofed animals - - don't like walking on it but you will have mowing problem unless you pull up each time & relay it.
Wire mesh in garden, deters cats from garden potty stops; can't scratch dirt & don't like walking around the wire.
