How big do watermelon vines have to be to bear fruit?
Question:Mines are about 9 inches long with no melons! They appear to be pretty healthy! And are making plently of deeply colored green leaves! Any techniques to make them fruit faster? Tips or Suggestions! Thanks
Answers:
That is really small even if you have the bush variety. Bush ones will grow about 2 ft or so, regular watermelon vines will stretch out about 12 feet and 3 to 4 feet wide. Patience is what I would recommend.
No, they'll flower and bear fruit when they are ready. If they are about nine inches long, they still have a lot of growing to do. Most watermelon vines get to be about six feet or so before they start blossoming and setting fruit.
Give them lots of room to spread, and lots of sunshine so the melons will be sweet!
They love hot soil, so only water in the early morning, and less often than you would think you need.
They're a little small yet to be bearing fruit. It's best to allow them to grow on top of straw mulch to keep the vines healthy, and to keep the fruit from contact with the ground. You should be able to get a bale of hay/straw at any feed store.
