i liked 'Emerald Green' Arborvitae but not sure if they are good for CA weather. My wife prefers something which can also add some color to backyard. any recommendations?

Answers:
Alameda County Water District Drought Tolerant Demonstration Garden exemplifies the principles of drought-tolerant landscaping. INFO: Free; 43885 S. Grimmer Blvd., Fremont, CA; 510/668-4200. for example, though, you can't go wrong with eucalyptus. go for the more decorative varieties, such as the "fictifolia" which bears clusters of red, occasionally pink or white flowers 20-50 ft. high. or "forrestiana" for a shorter tree, 12 ft. high, which bears solitary pendent red flowers. also acacia, jacaranda, crabapple. be sure to water consistently the first two years, while their root systems become established, and mulch generously. arborvitae is called "thuja" and wants alot of water and is prone to many pests and diseases, so it is not low maintenance, i'm afraid.
