For my 4-H project I have to do a demonstration (My project is gardening), ideas for this demonstration?

Question:I mean, the best I can come up with is "This is how you plant a seed", or "This is a shovel, it is used for."
Preferably nothing that involves carrying around dirt etc.
Any ideas?

Hi:
Think about a garden as an a little adventure in landscape design. Take a three different small pots of flowers. (you can buy them inexpensive) Arrange the pots in a triangle and explain this is part of designing a small flower bed. You could also do this with pint or one gallon shrubs. Take a look at my website and see if it will help at all. I am a landscaper and designer and if you need more suggestions, contact me. Think about how you would plan for this garden, how to prepare for your plants and different aspects of planting, watering and maintaining them. Make it simple for yourself. Good luck you and I hope you win the 4-H project! Kimberly
Glance through different sections and you may come up with some other ideas. Let me know how you made out!

Buy three small annuals and treat them differently: give one lots of sun and the correct amount of water, put one in the shade with the correct amount of water, put the third in the shade and overwater it. The results after 2 weeks or so should be obvious. Good luck with your project---
You need to bring a display that can be appreciated quickly and is relevant to todays organic conscious gardeners.
You could plan and plant a plot with only organic products and why they work or do not work.
Integrated pest management IPM uses both companion planting, disease and pest resistent plants, encourages beneficial insects and discourages pests with nontoxic methods.
1- Grow resistant plants
2- Grow wide variety, no monocultures.
3- Provide a water source and grow various nectar bearing plants to attract and sustain parasitic and predatory insects.
4- Use barriers where possible. Row covers or metal stem rings against cut worms, & co.
5- Keep log of previous pest outbreak dates to be able to predict future problems.
6- Hand pick if possible as with beetles or slugs.
7- Identify the specific pest once it arrives.
8- Choose an insecticide that is as specific to the pest at hand as possible and then use as little as possible.

Research home made remedies why they work and what they work on. Don't forget mechanical remedies like traps or copper rings. Look up information about theories and find out if there is evidence to support them. List sources and how you found them. [County agent, Master Gardeners, nursery personnel, books, Yahoo etc.]

Plan a garden plot for a full year and how to care for it. Optimize water and fertilizer use for specific plants you have chosen. You will need to know what and how to do a soil test and what the results mean for that. How do you amend soil using the test information.

You could do a project on water efficiency. Explain the plant/soil/water cycle. The different methods of watering
like drip, flood irrigation, overhead, and how to optimize them for the soil type and water needs of the plants.
