Should i water my pots outside today?
Question:its supposed to be in the 90s today. i went out to feel the dirt of my plants some of them are starting to look and feel dry. other ones not so much. what does that mean for the rest of their dirt? do they need water today?
Answers:
I use the finger method- stick finger in dirt- if it feels dry down to a knuckle- water. Night time coolness usually revives plants enough to get through until the next morning- then thoroughly soak- we just had 3 inches of rain and the soil is still dry- ho hum.
If the pots are dry, then water. if they are not dry.. don't.
Generally, when it's hot, it's not a bad idea to water, it helps keep the root mass cooler and the plants tend to stress less. Be careful of overwatering, though.. and be sure your pots drain out after watering.
water them
When temps get really hot then you pretty much need to water potted plants daily. If your plants are in really large containers then every 2 to 3 day might be enough. Still, it is best to check them everyday to make sure they don't get too dry. I failed to check one of my pots for only 2 days and in that short amount of time my plant completely wilted. The temps were in the 90's and my plant was unhappy. We've had rain for 20 days straight and I just wasn't in the mind set to water my pots.
Water your plants but don't get any water on the leaves or flowers.
