Would you rent an allottment with no water supply?
Question:Have been offered an allotment rent £20 per year but there are no plans to install water supply. Would I be daft to take it on?
Answers:
Take it on as it will give you so much pleasure, not to mention the exercise and the lovely fresh fruit and veg.Has it got a shed?If so put guttering both sides and a water butt on each and this will help with much of your needs.Has anyone else on the allotments got a water supply? Maybe you can buy some off him/her.Get in touch with your local water authority, they may have a cost effective idea for a supply. Each time you go there take some water with you.Lemonade bottles, milk containers anything you have to hand and keep them there as they are ideal for using as mimi cloches for your tender plants.Good luck, have fun.
Absolutely. Use watercatchers and catch rain, you'll be doing your bit for the enviroment too.
depends on what you intend to do with it now doesn't it?
Not sure, would you buy a car without an engine?
yes because you can buy a water supply when you own the building
Not at all. If your section of allotment has its own shed, simply add a water butt, and water will collect from the shed roof alll year round, which when combined with natural rainfall on the ground itself should be enough for most needs.
only if you dont like baths
Unless you are young and fit and can lug large plastic containers of water onto the site .then no. If you plant your young fruit and veg or salad plants they will need to be watered in. If there is no rain they will need regular watering all the time . A regular supply is almost essential or in a dry year you could lose nearly all your crop. Is there not another site with water you can have instead?
Funny vic, your first and last questions are opposite...so why someone says "Absolutely" or "yes" you can't tell if they are saying "yes, rent it" or "yes, you'd be daft"
It wouldn't put me off but you'll have to figure something out to get decent crops, mst veggies need artificial watering Perhaps get a water bowser on a small trailer or water butts on a shed etc. Or can you hose-pipe the water onto your plot from another one - maybe pay the owner to use thier water each year ?
You will find that most people on this particular allotment will be using water buts, its environmentally friendly too. Have 2 water butts and then you'll never run out of water!!
no. mine has no water, but its only £5 a year i just get lots of butts set up
no you could put water buts to catch water or you could bring it with you the veg will be great
