I am attempting to grow asparagus this year hoe long to harvest and any tips for success?
Question:I ahve new stalks that came up but they are thin so I heard it takes 2 years?
Answers:
When you harvest asparagus, you are harvesting the actual shoots. Putting out these shoots takes energy, and the energy comes from compounds stored in the roots. It takes a long time for the roots to store up enough energy so that they can put out a few trial shoots each year that get harvested instead of producing growing shoots. Thus, it is generally recommended to let all the first year shoots grow up into plants, and the second year, only take a few shoots. That way, the roots will get well-established. By about the 3rd or 4th year, the roots will be doing well enough that you can harvest freely, but always make sure that you let some good-sized shoots come up to provide the energy needed for next year's crop. And fertilize well--asparagus is a heavy feeder.
with the right combination of male and female plants, it can take up to 2 years to get a good harvest. DO NOT cut the plants down after the season, remove the dead area is spring. Them small shoots you see are very tender, so don't hesisate to cut and eat what you can . hope this helps, good luck
Yup he's rite I live in Stockton Ca, prob the biggest asperagus growing area in the valley. They call me Lisa D. also how weird?
