Who's fed up already with trying to get a nice garden. I've already got that autumn feeling and its not July!

Don't lose heart yet. I know its depressing with continual rain day in,week in, or should I say month in. There are still four months left to enjoy the fruits of our labours, so lovingly given and full of expectations, or am I being an optimist? we haven't had a bad summer for years. It could be a wake up call to all those misery guts who moan when its hot.

Mines just getting completely overgrown by brambles and weeds.
I can't get out to cut it back or put weedkiller on them because it won't stop raining for long enough!
It's depressing me..its like a jungle out there!!!!
ME!!! I gave up on it this year but it got so overgrown that I spent the whole of yesterday afternoon trimming roses and dead heading plants and got three massive bags of trimmings. Whats the use of having a garden when we dont have the sun to sit and enjoy it in? I have sat in my garden twice only this year. All that hard work for nothing!!
So far it is a summer for the slugs, they seem huge this year eating everything up. It might change now July is coming in but I do not think we are going to have much of a summer now the nights will soon be getting darker and it will soon be autumn.
the weeds have taken over my garden totally. i cant mow the lawn coz its too wet and we are in danger of the postie wanting danger money just to deliver our post through the jungle of my front lawn
I'm the oppisite of first two answers. It's been so hot and dry here that nothing is doing well. Started great in early spring, then we had a late freeze, things got going again , then hot and dry.I'm full of weeds, and folidge hardly any blooms. Thinking about going to containers only next year, I'm too old for this.
Try weeding and then put down a thick layer of wood chip over soil this does work .Every few weeks just have a mooch around your garden picking out the few weeds . I did mine two years ago and rarely weed . Always make sure you retop it everyear with more barkchip it really works .And sooner or later the sun is going to shine so enjoy .
We have spent a lot of money this year transforming my garden from a tip to a lovely garden
We have had a new lawn laid etc but its so annoying all the money we have have spent and weeks of really hard work .
Now its too wet to relax on our lawn and enjoy it
With all the dry weather we've had in Georgia and the water ban, It's almost impossible to have a nice garden.
I'm ready to just give up.
Ahh. Don't get demorolised. Next year, start your clearing jobs a bit earlier. Thant's not much help for now, so you'll have to get stuck in when the rain stops. Mine is actually looking rather better than I expected. The rain is doing the lawn the world of good and I cleared the borders a couple of weeks ago so they are looking pretty tidy too. Try to do a little every time the weather permits, and don't worry, I'm sure there'll be better weather to come and you can sit and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Remember, a garden doesn't have to be perfect and shouldn't be a chore but a pleasure. Who really cares if there are a few weeds, keep the lawn tidy, and just enjoy the natural beauty. And my advice is just POTTER. I do a little every time I'm in it, and it's amazing how much better that is than waiting and doing a hard days slog.
Have fun and enjoy. xxxxxxxxx
Every other summer I would have agreed with the feeling of being overwhelmed by the explosion of weeds this time of year. But I read a tip that is working great for me. I cleared my flower and veggie beds early then put a layer of cardboard down. Next went a layer of mulch, wood chips around the flowers, 5" of hay around the veggies. The cardboard will biodegrade by the end of the year, and in the meantime has provided an extra layer of weed prevention. In between the rain when the ground bakes to a crisp, the cardboard also helps to retain moisture better than mulch alone. Less cardboard in the landfills, and more organic material in my garden, a win-win situation. And a HUGE difference in the weed issue this year.
Try this: Take a 2 gal bucket nest year and cut the bottom off of it, take the handle off. At each plant push this in the ground around it. Now you can water them directly or indirectly if you choose. also all you need to weed is in the bucket. Use your weed eater for the rest. It is great. If you get real crazy, plant grass seed everywhere but in the buckets and space them out so you can get your mower down each isle. this will cut down on weeding, holds the moisture down under the grass for the plants, and it looks clean. All you see is 3/4 of a 2 gal buket sticking up out of the ground. This way to you dont have a muddy mess also.
fed up with all the slugs and snails got rid of earth in borders and put pea shingle down and filled pots with different plants. look on the bright side you don,t have to water just dehead all the slimy dead flowers
Summer is suppose to be a great time for the garden but not this year. With all the rain and floods I am waiting to see mine get washed away. lol
We have just landscaped our garden for the first time co we are in a house that was only built last year so this year was the "Year of the Garden"!!
We built a patio, Put up a shed, Built a raised bed etc!
Bought loads of plants and put them in and 2 days later discovered they were being eaten by slugs and snails!!
Disappointed was not the word! In fact there were several words which are not in the dictionary!!
However we persevered and put down slug pellets and slowly the garden is coming back to life!
We still dont have as many blooms on the flowers as we would like because we aren't getting enough sun but hopefully with the advent of summer and loads of sun they will all unfold and give us an Indian summer display!!
We are hopeful anyway and you should be too!
Oh yes and on the subject of weeds we sprayed on weed killer on the paths and patio and also over the bark and have had no trouble since!
But do use a non-residual weedkiller such as Pathclear or Bayer Garden as they will last for approx 4 months whereas a residual weedkiller like Round-up will only kill the existing weeds and is totally defunct when it hits the soil!
Hope all this waffle helps!
Good luck and as Alan Titchmarsh always says - "Enjoy your garden - whatever the weather!"
