Can I plant anything right now?
Question:I have absolutely no knowledge of flowers, gardening, and none of the like. I want to add some hanging plants to my patio and I have no idea what to plant. I like color. I'm a girly girl, so pinks and yellows and pretty blues would be nice. Any idea what would be good to plant right now in Alabama? Or would it just be better to buy potted plants?
Answers:
no its not too late. just take them inside once the nights get frostyeish. any color you like is ok. water them every day and leave them off the hanging hooks so the water drains out, thyen hang them again
all clear?
good!
If it is in a sun area get some petunias. You can plant them or get hanging baskets. They come in all sorts of colors. Also, million bells are really pretty. There is a really neat pink color. I love million bell hanging baskets... they are BEAUTIFUL!!
If you are planting/hanging in a shade area... get impatiens. They also have a variety of colors to choose from. Also very pretty and all of these flowers are easy care. Good luck!!
I live in Maryland I agree with the answer recommending petunias. Very forgiving and heat tollerant. We just set out flowering tobbaco plants. These too are a good choice. I have just planted Zennia seeds and they are coming up nicely in this heat.
Enjoy your garden. :-)
Right now, buy a hanging plant (if you have a place for it) that has been started for you and ready to enjoy. Starting from seed or small plants will not give you the flowers you want, this late in summer. Next year start in Spring.
It is ok to buy from places like Lowe's, Home Depot but you will get a better climitized plant for your area and better advice for beginners from a Nursery. They can tell a beginner if it is a shade plant or a sun plant. Depending on where you have a place for a plant, is important as to which plants you should get.. Full sun, part sun, shade is very important to a a successful plant.
For example, beginners just don't understand why an Impatient is dieing or strained... You can never water them enough to help them in full sun. They either die of root rot or strained from just too much direct sun. And so it is with each plant. Right plant in right place. I still find it fustrating that I want a plant and don't have the right place to grow it.
Best advice I can give a beginner is . don't settle for a salesperson who is just a clerk and rings up your sale. Find someone who will take the time and explain things to you.
1. Because you won't waste your money
2. and because you will learn from each helpful sales clerk for your next purchase.
3. Take note of the flowers that are combined in pots that have been put together by professionsal. In a Nursery, they can give you the name of the plants so you can build a list of the lones you like the best, what they look like, what type of light they need, etc. Then next year or so,.. you can start building the ones that please you the most..
