When can I take lupin cuttings?
Question:
Answers:
Lupin cuttings are generally taken in April. You can divide large clumps of lupins or you can take basal cuttings, i.e., cuttings with a piece of root attached...
Why would you want too? Collect the seeds.
As Lulu says collect the seeds, you'll have more success
best way to get baby lupins id let them flower and go to seed, then collect the seeds and use those
you cut the corm in the spring, or sow them easy to grow but the slugs love them,
You don't take cuttings as such, what you do it to carefully lift the plant and divide the roots into sections, how many section depends on the size of the root, usually about four, replant the sections with as much roots as you can and keep the top foliage on, water them, and don't let them dry out and you will have new plants very quickly. This works at most times of the year but better in early spring. if doing this in high summer the main problem is keeping them from drying out.
This is the way that all Gardeners increase Lupins, easy and works all the time.
I am a huge fan of lupins. I have loads of them. You dont need to take cuttings. You can split if they are very well developed but be very carefull when you do this so you dont damage the root too much and keep them well moist for a couple of weeks after the split and after transplant. The other way( easiest) is to quite simply collect the seeds. I plant my seeds as soon as they can be harvested and leave them out all winter. I have very hardy lupins which last deep into winter due to my way. I have done this for years . Yes 50% dont last the first winter thats why i plant 100s and 100s of seeds. The ones that do suvive get a good start for the first year and next year they should be rather huge. Remember Lupins dont flower in the first year.
