My poor tomatoe plant?
Question:I trimmed off some leaves like suggested on Yahoo a while ago, but my plant seems to wilt, or turn yellow on the extremity leaves....am I underwatering or over watering..is it just too hot where I live?
I do have three new tomatoes shaping up, plus four or five new little yellow flowers (that turn into tomatoes eventually.)
Is this normal, do I keep trimming the yellow/wilted leaves?
ps, it gets around 107F here, but I water twice a day...
Answers:
Leaves like that normally mean overwatering.
What's your soil like? If you are planting in sand or clay, that's your underlying problem. Your mother always told you that you need fiber, and the fact is, your tomato plant does, too. Get a bale of spagnum, and till it into the soil. The peat moss will act like little sponges, giving up water when your plant needs it, without giving your plant a case of wet feet.
Awwww..I'm having the same problem with mine. Not sure what i am doing wrong either.
It's hot where I love So-Cal. My plants are not in direct sun light. The one that is is wilting a bit. They get plenty of sunshine in the morning but are shaded though-out the afternoon. Try some fresh topsoil or manure and keep them out of the sun during the afternoon.
As far as watering I do it once a day, late afternoon. Never during mid-day it will cook the leafs.
Hope this helps
I don't know who told you to trim off the yellow leaves but it wasn't especially good advice. 107 degrees is very hot for a tomato plant. It will not set fruit at those temperatures but may survive with the fruit it has. I would not put sphagnum moss around the plants but I would recommend putting some kind of mulch, i.e. hay, straw or the like around the plants on top of the soil. That will help the soil stay a little cooler. You may also be over watering. I don't know how much you are watering in the morning and night but I would water in the AM only and try not to wet the plant itself. Check the soil If it's wet, you're over watering. It should be only damp. Use a knife and scoop out a little soil about 3 inches down. If the soil there is damp, that's all the water the plant needs. Keep it that way. Good luck.
I would just trim them off and keep the plant out of direct sun if it gets that hot. If it's in a container especially, water it everyday - in the early morning.
I don't cut the yellow of of mine. You should only water your Garden once a day and that is after the sun goes down around 8 or nine in the Evening.
This sounds more like an aphids problem. They are tiny white bugs that literally take over the health of the plant. Look on the bottom of the leaves. A mixture of water and dish soap will make them leave the plant. Spray it on till it literally drips off the leaves should you find the bugs. You should never water after dark. That promotes mold in your soil. Always try to water in the early morning.
Probably a heat thing..I lived in the florida keys 6 years ..I had to grow a hybred tomato in the summer months called "heat wave" variety. The keys you can grow them in the winter as well..never freezes..but the summers are hot...
