How do they put up massive cranes?
Question:How do they put up massive cranes, there are two near me and I would like to know how they get it all including concrete blocks to the top?
Answers:
Depends on what type of crane. Some build themselves, others have to be assembled using another crane (a lot of times using a not so little crane that folds up for transport).

Here's an article on how Tower Cranes work:

They bring in a really big crane to erect...no, kidding! I was mystified by this until I watched one going up. They keep adding segments at the bottom. It's very clever.
Modern cranes folded, and they simply "unfold" on site.
See page 6 of http://www.liebherr.com/downloads/cc_42k...
Older cranes were assembled horizontally first, and then heaved up (see http://www.tpub.com/content/construction... )
To use one crane to erect another is the last option, and it begs the question "how was the crane erected that helps the other crane to be erected"?
In very rare cases, a transport helicopter is being used (expensive!)
the winch and weights are fitted at ground level and then the crane builds its self, by jacking its self up and fitting a section at the bottom and so on.
withh great difficulty, its usually done with hydrolic lifts . 4 to five foot at a time, using a mobile crane to lift and place the sections,
