Growing sunflowers from birdseed?

Question:Can I grow sunflowers from the seeds found in my birdseed mix? If so, how should I go about planting them?

Answers:
Yes you can. The sunflower seeds used in birdseed is usually black oil sunflower seeds, which are extremely good for the birds as they contain a lot of oil. Plant seeds 4-6 inches apart, covering with 1/2 inch soil. Water just enough to keep soil moist. Sunflowers don't need much water or fertiliser. Once your sunflowers blooms start to fade, the birds will have a continuous supply of nutritious food...

The birds ate the sunflower seeds from my feeder--ones they dropped grew into plants in the garden next to the feeder. I would say just throw some on the ground and put some potting soil over them--
Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. What is in bird seed is often too old to sprout but it might.
Grey stripe are tall , and black oil not so tall and might be branched.

If you want to try this and not waste a lot of space, start two seeds per cell in a tray. Plant what comes up about 18 " apart. Otherwise, work up the ground, throw out the seed, expect the birds and mice and voles to take a lot of them. Thin any volunteers to 12-18" apart.
Sunflowers can grow from birdseed. I use black-oil sunflower seed and I have several gigantic sunflowers in my yard as a result. I think the birds are planting them to make sure I don't run out!
You really don't have to do anything. I have tons of them around my bird feeder and have to pull them up daily.

I let some of them grow and now have three or four tall ones.

Anyway, yes, you can and just place a little bit of dirt over the sunflower seeds. water every 3-4 days. You are going to have sooo many sunflowers.
