make sure the pit is intact and undamaged then ram a stick thru its center, place it in a container of water in such a way that only half of the pit is in water. then wait for 14 days. roots should emerge in 4 days or so.

stick thru the center. . .hmmm. . yeah. it might damage it. 'twas supposed to be a joke detective holmes.

If you make sure the pit is undamaged first, then you ram a stick thru it's center, wont the stick damage the pit?
.
We used to cut off half the fruit so that the pit stuck out the bottom. Then we put toothpicks into the fruit and suspended it in old jars on a windowsill. The kids had to keep the water touching the bottom of the pit and within a few days roots appeared then the stem popped up a week later.

I always thought it was too bad we couldn't grow avocados here in NY, because we always wound up throwing these plants away.
.
Oh well.
We used to do this with sweet potatoes in the spring then transplant them when the weather warmed. At least you can eat the taters in a few weeks.
Hold the avocado pit or seed, pointy end up and use the sharp end of a wooden toothpick and push into the upper middle of the avocado pit. (You might break a few toothpicks doing this, but you can do it). Then push two more toothpicks in the avocado pit to make it even and when you turn it to you will look like the spokes of a wheel. Then put the avocado pit into a paper cup so the toothpicks rest on the edge. Put water in the cup up to the middle of the avocado pit.
Thanks
Then wait and wait and wait. Cause it takes about six weeks for a root to emerge from the avocado pit. But, it does, eventually. I have a 2 or three foot avocado plant growing right now in the kitchen window.
