Do you collect seeds from your garden, and scatter them on roadside verges and derelict land?
Question:or are you territorial... and unconcerned about the beautification of any space beyond your own garden wall?
Answers:
I don't but it's a lovely idea and I'm going to start doing it tomorrow.
Thanks for the tall plants on the verges near junctions that's exactly what we need to promote road safety
lol, forget all that, we dont even have seeds in our garden! :D
no
I've never thought of it, to tell the truth, but I like the idea. The other guy is right though, they shouldn't be tall plants. Nasturtium might be nice and lobelia: lots of color, little care.
I've always liked the states that plant flowers in highway dividers. It lowers maintenace costs and the carbon footprint caused by lawn mowers.
Thanks for the idea!
hell catweazle i heard you gave all your seed to aunt sally
I throw seeds everywhere. If I got seeds I toss., Unless of course they are some invasive types that need management. Please be careful what you throw around.
NEVER THOUGHT OF IT BUT I THINK IT,S A GOOD IDEA
I used to live in the country side, near woodland, and along the path through the woods, I planted loads of daffodil bulbs, when I was a boy. It looked really beautiful, no body new I had done it, and many people remarked as to where they came from. I never let on though, they came from our garden, I dug them up as they multiplied and divided them.
What a good idea, maybe short plants better, and maybe better to spread when the grass is fresh cut, i used to collect for seedlings, have no time anymore and it annoyed me just wasting them..cool!
You are freaken crazy LOl
hate gardens myself!but thats a cracking question, cos now i can gather all the droppings from next doors leylandi(not sure if thats how its spelt).that grow from any groove they can find, and spread them around the world.ohhhh yes eventually i will rule the world.ha,ha,ha,ha,ha.(sorry,i got slightly carried away then)!!!!!
I don`t but I know someone who does!
The second one
Coincidentally, I have just started clearing a small communal area in front of my house ready for planting (If it ever stops raining) and hopefully the local kids wont rip it up or spoil it for the fun of it.
I read once about a person who made "seed bombs" by mixing up some soil and seeds, in a kind of meatball fashion, and then firing them out of their car with a catapault (not into gardens or whatever, into areas that needed it!). I thought that was a fantastic idea. When it rains next, then hopefully the seeds will germinate, and will have their own little soil ball to get them started!
I do think it's a shame to be territorial, it's nice to try and brighten up other places as well as your own garden. Especially particulary drab and lifeless places. But in my experience wild flowers "take" better if they are planted out as small plants; scattered seeds seem not to grow so well for me. I have tried a couple of times to get indigenous but uncommen wild plants going in different places. Mixed results, but it's a rewarding project.
Biodiversity needs all the help it can get in todays world of agribusiness and heavy chemical monocrop farming.
Please think about this ..although it sounds a really nice idea... do we really want to over run the natural British Flora with seeds from man made mixtures designed to please the gardener or from other countries .
One man's idea of the perfect plant my be another mans weed.
Th rhodedondrum is an imported plant which everybody thought was great at the time it turns out to be a scourge throughout the land. and we are having to remove it from the country side as it kills off the soil for other plants. Perhaps we should all just spray some ddt on all the verges. !
yes, I do collect seeds from my garden. And, no i do not scatter on roadside verges and derelict land because even though they are beautiful thay can become tall or out of control because of lack of care. I love to share my seeds with many and I do so on a garden website called gardenweb. Members (free membership with sign-up )can share with people all over the united states or other countries if you live there. You can give away seeds to people who are just starting their gardens for postage. You can meet lots of gardeners who alow enjoy your hobby and maybe you teach each other a thing or two also. I enjoy the beautification of my yard as well as the neighbors, the family, the coworkers, friends, well.just about anybody!
Also, you can offer to plant seed for your local school system, church, etc.
It's been a while since I've done that. It sounds like a very kind thing to do.
I don't because I am also concerned with the spread of non-native and invasive plants. There are several plants in California that escaped from gardens to become major problems to the environment. Spanish Broom is one of those. Beautiful, but chokes out everything else, and contributes to our horrible wildfire situation. If you want to give your environment a hand, do some research first. You might be dong more harm than good.
