Adding in some shade perennial such as hostas, columbines, foxgloves, ferns, etc would look really pretty. Sometimes being on a slope gives it even a more natural look. I think you will have trouble probably with hedges though because very few hedges grow in the shade. Maybe some nice stones worked in with the perennials.
Good luck!
I'm in Zone 4.
Perennials are always good. I always liked tiger lilies because they are so hardy & multiply for the larger areas. Avoid planting on a lawn area unless you created an underground 'fence' to prevent the lilies from spreading into the lawn.
For a border in back of my house I planted lilac trees. These particular ones were named Persian Lilac and grow 7'. These turned into the most beautiful lilac. The blooms were large with a pinkesh lavender color with a more fragrant smell than the typical lavender ones that my mom has. What a great accident they turned out to be. Also, after Spring bloom, clip off the spent bloom and it blooms again in the Fall but not as much.
