Avocado pit: Dead or alive?
Question:When I got an avocado pit, I had the idea of planting it. I didn't have any toothpicks to suspend it in water with, so I used some small weird utensils. One of the utensils was real metal, and so after a while it started to rust and black circles appeared around the metal in the avocado. A few days ago, the rusted utensil couldn't hold up the avocado and I was afraid it would come out of the avocado, so while I was attempting to replace the utensil, the avocado slipped out of my fingers and fell to the bottom of the cup of water. I am afraid it damaged the tap root, because it went from pearly white to brownish black and wasn't as straight as it was before. Now it hasn't been growing at ALL and every 2 days the water becomes cloudy.
Oh, and took a very long time (7 weeks?) for the avocado just to split.
So could it be dead or alive?
Answers:
You killed it. You should have used only wooden tooth picks. The metal reacted to the acid chemicals in the avacado and infected the avacado.
I would say dead.
it is alive, i grew an avocado tree out of a pit from one of my eaten ones. it is just a seed. das good
dead. start over and do it right, and keep in mind, an avoicado tree needs both male and female to produce fruit. if you want avocados find a nursery and buy two trees, male and female. good luck
It may not be dead. Please try this:
Get a medium size planting pot, add good soil, like Miracle Gro and take the round side of the avocado and stick in the dirt. Place the pointed side up with just a little bit of it showing. In a few weeks, the stone will break and a little tiny sprout will appear.
You don't have to start an avocado with toothpicks.
I have always planted mine in the soil and they have grown well. It is fun to watch the seed (or stone) break and begin to grow the plant.
Avocardo seed/pit is easy to grow in a pot using potting mix. And I've grown it in the garden as well. Try again with soil and it will grow.
The tree will not bear fruit for a number of years but meanwhile you will have a lovely indoor plant with glossy leaves. That's what I do with my seeds.
I Can't grow the tree outside as we have nasty frosts here and Avocados are a tropical fruit.
