How do you care for sunflowers?
Question:I have just planted sunflowers in my garden and need to know whether you prune and/or trim the flower once it has wilted. And, on what area of the sunflower do you trim/prune?
Answers:
once they get big you might have to support them with something.. like rope them.. to allow support... when the heads start to wilt and seeds start to form give them a day and let the most seeds form and cut the heads off.. then let them dry... keep seeds in a cool dry place and then next year you will have seeds to start all over.. and i am sure some seeds will fall out before you get to cut the heads off so you might have more sunflowers next year without even doing anything! lol good luck
I've always let he birds peck away at it, then the next year you will probably find sunflowers in places you didn't plant them.
Depending on what type you have planted you might need to stake them when they get taller, now the trick is to keep the birds and squirrels away from them.
I don't know what kind of sunflowers you have but I answered this question because I love mine. We are growing 12 foot tall sunflowers and they are great to watch grow.
The flower follows the sun all day long and I figure that's how they got their name.
I only have one flower per plant and mine do not need pruning.
