Dying grass...Help!!?
Question:We moved into our house last winter, and the grass looks terrible. Sod was laid in the front yard probably 2 years ago...but it looks dead and is full of weeds. The back yard has HUGE dead spots. This spring we put seed down on the dead spots and nothing grew. Is it time to call in professional help, or are there things we can do? Someone mentioned using gypsum on the yard?? HELP!

I agree with the other response that you might be infested with white grubs, which eat the roots of your grass. You'll find them pretty quickly because they live just a few inches below the surface.
Did you loosen the soil and remove dead thatch before seeding? Also it does help to cover the new seeds with 1/2 - 1 inch of soil and to use a looseweave burlap groundcover (meant for seed starting, not for blocking weeds) to keep the soil from eroding while you water the patches daily. The soil must be kept damp until it's ready for its first mow, then you need to do the deep watering 1-2x per week to get those roots to grow deep.
Gypsum will loosen up your soil...in the long run. It won't fix your dead patches this summer.
You should check your soil's mineral levels and pH. This is a great first step in understanding what your soil's problems might be caused by. You can find inexpensive kits at a garden store and it takes about 30 minutes to find out your soil's basic conditions and if it needs treatment. Your local university extension can provide services to do the testing too, just send them soil samples. :)
Also, get a mulching mower and let your grass clippings go back to the soil. Your soil will retain more nitrogen and you'll need less fertilizer. You are using fertilizer regularly, right?
have someone check your soil.. you may need to add sulphur to raise your Ph. levels... do you have a lot of pine trees?
Check your soil first.
Or, I had the SAME problem. What I did was ordered Patch Perfect. And in about a week, there was green grass! It was so wonderful!
You might have an infestation of white grubs in your yard (the larvae of either June or Japanese beetles) Lift up an area of dead grass and look for little white, C-shaped bugs. If you have them you need to treat the entire lawn soon, or else you could get a bigger problem!
what kind of grass is it in Texas we've been having problems with brown patch, circular dead areas in lawn because of all the rain , TRY FERTILIZER , OR IRONITE
